AG Wilson's Success at the Belfast Marathon: A New Chapter in Employee Wellbeing
AG Wilson Civil Engineering recently made its mark at the Belfast Marathon, an event that highlighted the company’s commitment to employee wellbeing and community support. This initiative, part of the company’s broader Health & Wellbeing Plan, saw the formation of three relay teams and one solo participant, reflecting a collective enthusiasm spurred by staff interest.
The Journey to the Marathon
Given AG Wilson’s operations across Northern Ireland and Scotland, many employees face the challenge of working away from home, making group training sessions difficult. Despite this, the team maintained strong connections through a dedicated group chat, sharing their training progress, personal bests, and offering encouragement along the way. Early in 2024, AG Wilson collaborated with the local council, partnering on the "Get Business Moving" program. This partnership provided employees with access to training programs like Couch to 5k and 5k to 10k, ensuring they were well-prepared for race day on May 5th.
The morning of the marathon was charged with anticipation and excitement, particularly as it marked a first-time experience for many participants. The teams proudly donned vests in support of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, with helpline numbers printed on the back—a clear testament to the company’s commitment to mental health.
Why the Belfast Marathon?
The decision to participate in the marathon was inspired by numerous benefits. It promoted physical health, boosted mental wellbeing, facilitated team building, encouraged a healthy lifestyle, and uplifted overall morale. Engaging in non-work activities like this marathon has proven to be an excellent way to foster a positive work environment. This was AG Wilson’s inaugural participation in such an event, and the experience has been so positive that discussions about next year’s marathon are already underway.
Memorable Moments
One of the standout moments was seeing Fergal Mackle, a cost manager at AG Wilson, complete the full marathon. Fergal’s journey through the 26.2-mile course was marked by camaraderie, as he paused to take photos with colleagues and fully immerse himself in the atmosphere—a true embodiment of team spirit and determination.
Supporting Mental Health
AG Wilson’s choice to support the Lighthouse Club was driven by the charity’s dedication to construction workers and their families. The company had considered many worthy causes but ultimately chose the Lighthouse Club for its targeted support in mental health and suicide prevention within the industry.
In April 2024, AG Wilson had the privilege of hosting the Make It Visible team, a visit that was met with positive feedback from employees who found the event both informative and beneficial.
Matching Donations: A Gesture of Encouragement
To further encourage fundraising efforts, AG Wilson’s Managing Director, Richard Chambers, pledged to match the amount raised by the marathon teams. Event organiser and H&S Manager, Shauna McKay, who also participated in the marathon, shared her personal reflections on the experience: “Having participated in this event myself, I fully appreciate how beneficial this process has been for my own mental and physical wellbeing. It is equally rewarding to know that our efforts will make such a positive impact on others in need of crucial support.”
AG Wilsons participation in the Belfast Marathon not only highlighted the company's commitment to employee wellbeing but also resulted in raising an impressive £2,500 for the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. This achievement underscores the impact of collective effort and the company wishes to extend thanks to everyone who contributed to this success.
